My main external HDD just died. You know, the one that contained about 800 gigs of vidding source, clips from back when I still used to make hard clips, and most importantly all my files for the TWD vid I've been working on on-and-off for 4 years. With the new season coming up I was getting ready to make some progress on it, and I was using the HDD just yesterday without issues.
This wouldn't be such a big deal if this hadn't happened before in some form, multiple times - one of the reasons it's taking me so long to make this vid is that I had a crap ton of technical issues. I lost my first batch of clips on an old hard drive, then I started using soft clips in Vegas and my project file got corrupted, and now I lost both 6 seasons worth of clips and 180 GB of episodes which will be a bit of a pain to reacquire. It's just another obstacle on top of my general lack of motivation that I've had with vidding, and I'm sad because I so desperately want this vid to exist.
Right now I'm going back and forth between almost crying and laughing because this vid is obviously cursed.

I wish hard drives were less expensive and video files less huge. Make backups, friends.

It also contained other WIPs I was hoping to finish... sometime, maybe for Festivids or cons. But then I've probably been holding on to some of them for a few years too many and should be relieved they're gone?

For a few years I've been thinking that it would be nice to have a place where vidders (and non-vidders!) could publish their unused vid ideas for others to take and use if they were feeling uninspired, or just looking for a challenge. Like, something more organised and accessible instead of everybody's individual journals/tumblrs/twitters. I mentioned this on twitter and with [personal profile] par_avion's and [personal profile] thirdblindmouse's input ended up making a simple google spreadsheet for this purpose.

I figured many of my friends who may be interested in this aren't on twitter, so I'm posting it here too: Vid ideas for sharing!
It's editable by everyone who has the link, so you don't need to be logged into a google account.

Vid ideas are oddly personal to me, I feel very protective of them and posting them in public feels like laying my soul bare in an uncomfortable way, even though actually letting go of ideas I know I'll never use feels liberating too. And looking at other contributions already sparked new vidding inspiration in me that I haven't felt in a while. :)

I got three perfect amazing vids this year!!!!!!!!

Centuries, a Wayne's World vid
Commander Badass, a tribute to Commander Lewis from The Martian
Wir beide, a Kommissar Rex vid

WHERE DO I EVEN BEGINNNNNNN. I am so happy that two of my long-time requests have been filled, both of which were extremely formative fandoms of my childhood, and that I got a vid about one of my biggest fandoms of 2015 in addition to that. So happy.

I made 3 vids this year (...again) and I think only one of them is pretty obvious, although so far none of the guessers in the official Guess the Festividder post seem to think so.
I also abandoned more WIPs than usual this Festivids and felt a bit awful about it but a couple of those requests were filled by other vidders, so that and my amazing gifts for me made me feel a lot better about it.

I haven't watched many vids yet but here's a handful of not-for-me-vids that I loved so far:

Pick a Part That's New, Long Way Round/Down - watch it for Ewan McGregor's butt and a fuckin' bear
This Must Be The Place, Fear The Walking Dead - it's so beautiful and wistful
Still Alive, Black Sails - HILARIOUS PIRATES
Galaxyrise - multifandom in spaaaaaace
Elliot, Mr. Robot - I don't have words to describe this, it's just so interesting
Your Mother, Saga - this is just so amazing technically. How does one put so much movement into static comic book pages, vidder is probably a wizard

[personal profile] chaila, [tumblr.com profile] princessofliechtenstein and [tumblr.com profile] coffeegameslove asked:
2. Is there a genre or style you've yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

It's not so much a specific style, but more that I generally just want to be able to make better use of effects, colourings, overlays, masks, zooms, etc. Technically I know how to achieve these things, but I find it difficult to determine when and where and how exactly they could be used to improve my vid or emphasise a point that I want to get across. In the end I'm always just happy to be looking at a full timeline and can't be bothered to fiddle with effects, and I want to overcome that laziness/cluelessness.

[personal profile] chaila asked:
5. Share one of your strengths.
I mentioned in my answer to the "typical you-vid" question that one of the things people comment on the most is my use of parallels, and I think that's become one of my strengths throughout my last couple of vids. Sort of tangential to that is that I'm good at linking clips to carry over motion, make it look like it's one camera movement even if it's from different scenes, or multiple characters completing each other's movements, stuff like that.

[personal profile] odessie asked:
15. Do you work mostly from start to finish, or do you vid sections out of order?
It's increasingly out of order the longer I work on a vid. I try to create some kind of coherent beginning to build on, but that doesn't always work. When a vid starts forming in my head there will be sections that look fully formed and that's what I will put on the timeline first. Then I listen to the song, and whenever I have an idea I'll put those clips down. I tend to do that several times for quite a while, play the song over and over again and fill more gaps with each listen. Sometimes when I'm working on one section I'll have an epiphany for a different section and I'll skip around.

21. If you were to revise one of your older vids from start to finish, which would it be and why?
I would like to pretend that my first few vids don't exist, so I'll go with my fifth one, my Journey vid. :P It was the first time I vidded a video game and I think it's very visible that I approached it pretty much as I would live-action source, and that was a mistake. Today I would focus more on the characters and less on the pretty landscapes, i.e. zoom in closer, and DEFINITELY cut down on the crossfades holy crap so many crossfades.
And most importantly I would pay more attention to quality of the source. I picked the first gameplay I found on Youtube, the one I'd watched before, and just went with it. It's rather blurry and washed out and there was a ton of shaky footage in it that makes me cringe today.
