[personal profile] chaila, [tumblr.com profile] princessofliechtenstein and [tumblr.com profile] coffeegameslove asked:
2. Is there a genre or style you've yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

It's not so much a specific style, but more that I generally just want to be able to make better use of effects, colourings, overlays, masks, zooms, etc. Technically I know how to achieve these things, but I find it difficult to determine when and where and how exactly they could be used to improve my vid or emphasise a point that I want to get across. In the end I'm always just happy to be looking at a full timeline and can't be bothered to fiddle with effects, and I want to overcome that laziness/cluelessness.

[personal profile] chaila asked:
5. Share one of your strengths.
I mentioned in my answer to the "typical you-vid" question that one of the things people comment on the most is my use of parallels, and I think that's become one of my strengths throughout my last couple of vids. Sort of tangential to that is that I'm good at linking clips to carry over motion, make it look like it's one camera movement even if it's from different scenes, or multiple characters completing each other's movements, stuff like that.

[personal profile] odessie asked:
15. Do you work mostly from start to finish, or do you vid sections out of order?
It's increasingly out of order the longer I work on a vid. I try to create some kind of coherent beginning to build on, but that doesn't always work. When a vid starts forming in my head there will be sections that look fully formed and that's what I will put on the timeline first. Then I listen to the song, and whenever I have an idea I'll put those clips down. I tend to do that several times for quite a while, play the song over and over again and fill more gaps with each listen. Sometimes when I'm working on one section I'll have an epiphany for a different section and I'll skip around.

21. If you were to revise one of your older vids from start to finish, which would it be and why?
I would like to pretend that my first few vids don't exist, so I'll go with my fifth one, my Journey vid. :P It was the first time I vidded a video game and I think it's very visible that I approached it pretty much as I would live-action source, and that was a mistake. Today I would focus more on the characters and less on the pretty landscapes, i.e. zoom in closer, and DEFINITELY cut down on the crossfades holy crap so many crossfades.
And most importantly I would pay more attention to quality of the source. I picked the first gameplay I found on Youtube, the one I'd watched before, and just went with it. It's rather blurry and washed out and there was a ton of shaky footage in it that makes me cringe today.

[personal profile] thirdblindmouse asked:

1. Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-vid.

Ahh this is the hardest question so far. (I've actually answered all of the others in this post before getting back to this one. x_x) I still experiment a lot and try new things with every new vid that I make so there's not one thing I consistently do.
[personal profile] jetpack_monkey once told me there's a "unique aesthetic" to my vids that made him recognise one of them last Festivids, which was completely mind-boggling to me, but I do see that now, even though I can't quite explain what it is.
In terms of technical stuff, the only thing I can think of is that I always try to do something special with the titles and credits, incorporate them in some way that makes them look like they belong there, or something. That's a thing I'd consider "typically me" by now.
Also, one of the things that people comment on the most are visual parallels in my vids, and I have a lot of fun looking for these and drawing them out, so I guess that's part of my comfort zone. And first and foremost I try to make vids that make me feel the same feels the show/movie/game made me feel, and try to portray what the source is about for me, so I guess that's part of it, too. *????* This feels like the wrong answer but my brain is fried.

14. If you only could vid one show/movie for the rest of your life, which show/movie would it be?
Probably Sons of Anarchy. It seems like a weird choice because I haven't made any SoA vids yet, but it's the show I have the most vid bunnies for and most of them are likely to be made. It's super inspiring to me. My current 1st priority WIP is a SoA vid, too. It's just a rather straining show to vid, for me, because it's dark and heavy and very dialogue-driven, so even clipping can be very exhausting, which is why I haven't finished any of these vids yet. Uhm. Maybe I should have picked an easy show to vid for the rest of my life. D:

18. Describe your perfect vidding conditions.

[personal profile] beccatoria asked:

25. How do you feel about collaborations?
It's a thing I totally want to try some day! I'm fascinated by how people do it and work out the logistics of it when they can't meet offline, and it's a challenge I wanna take someday when I'm more experienced and comfortable enough asking someone if they'd be interested. I'm baaaaad at expressing my ideas though, explaining exactly what I'm seeing in my head when I'm planning a vid, so that might be tough to work through, but maybe it's just a matter of finding someone whose brain is really compatible with my thinking. YAAAY CHALLENGES. :D

28. Do you take liberties with canon or are you very strict about your vids being canon compliant?
I wouldn't say I'm strict, but throughout my fannish life I've never been into fanon that isn't strongly based on canon. I don't read or write fic so it's unlikely that I'd ever make an AU vid based on existing fanworks or anything like that, either. The Steve/Bucky vid I made will be the closest I'll ever get to taking liberties with canon, I think, but then the level of canon compliance of that vid really lies in the eye of the viewer. :P

[personal profile] frayadjacent gave me these! (all questions here)

4. How many vid ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?
Bwahaha oh no. If we're really talking vid ideas, maybe something like 30? I don't even know. But the ones that are more likely to happen are... less than 10? There's a couple of ideas I had last Festivids that I didn't make, but may do this year, so I can't talk about them. And I guess the ones I've started working on/clipping for already should be left for the "vids in progress" question, and I've done some work for most of my ideas.
But there's a Shameless vid I've been thinking about a lot, set to an Ed Sheeran song. Mostly focused on Fiona, who I identify with the most. I'm terrified of making it because it'll be very very personal, I might not even publish it if I ever end up finishing it, but I really want to make it for myself.

7. Point to a section from one of your favorite vids you've made and explain why you're proud of it.
I've always really loved Elizabeth's introduction in the beginning of Never Seen the Light of Day, the clips of her almost turning and finally turning all the way to face the viewer. There's not much to explain about it, I was just really pleased with the build-up and the flow and motion, and it still gives me fuzzy feelings when I rewatch it. :D
And, oh, I can't decide between that and something in When You Were Young -- starting at 1:55, particularly the Bucky parts with his hand, slowly reclaiming control until he finally reaches out for Steve and they start saving each other over and over again. Really proud of how that worked out and that it apparently came through to the viewer, too.

18. Describe your perfect vidding conditions. (also asked by [personal profile] thirdblindmouse)
All I need is a bottle of water, maybe a cup of tea or coffee, and the certainty that I won't be disturbed for at least a couple of hours. (Actually, now that I think about it, the latter is probably the reason why vidding tends to mess up my sleeping patterns so much -- there's always *something* going on during the day, noisy people in the house, my dog needing attention, stuff. Late evenings and night time are really the only times where I can be 100% sure I won't be disturbed.)

20. Choose a section from one of your earlier vids and talk about whether and how you'd do it differently now.
Something in What Else Is There -- it's funny to think of it as an "earlier vid" because it's just a little over a year old, but I've grown so much as a vidder since then, so I consider it an early vid! And I couldn't pick only one section in any of the vids I made before that because I'd just remake them entirely lol.
Anyway, I was never happy with the ending -- I wouldn't use all of the fight scenes and Helena getting shot by Sarah anymore, it was such a lazy solution. Finding good endings is always hard for me though and I couldn't think of anything better now, either. D:

Didn't want to do this at first because I only made four vids this year, but I already didn't do it last year for the same reason and I was really looking forward to it since then, so, what the hell, I'm doing it.

Vidses I made:
We're Here Because We're Here (Journey, for Festivids - January)
Kopfkino (Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken, VidUKon Premiere - finished in March, released in May)
What Else Is There? (Orphan Black - June)
Ellie (The Last of Us - July)

Bit late with this, but Festivids was eating my brain.

I used to watch ALL the shows up until a few years ago and then just stopped getting into new fandoms, only continuing with 2 or 3 shows that were in their last seasons (Buffy being an exception - started that in '10 or '11). But in the beginning of 2012 I started catching up with everything I missed during that time, and was so overwhelmed with the amount of fantastic TV that has been made.
