This vid was basically finished in my head since 2014. I've been stubbornly offering this fandom for 3 years and promised myself that if nobody would request it again this Festivids, I'd finally make it for a con this year. I'd always much rather make vids as gifts though, so I'm glad it was finally requested!

Of course it ended up being somewhat weird/funny/awkward timing for that. I went into Festivids feeling inspired and motivated and then November rolled around and things happened in the world and they never stopped happening and I had this vid to finish that was about AWFUL THINGS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD, things that suddenly felt real and conceivable in a way they hadn't before.

What I always liked about How I Live Now was that it felt more realistic than other movies about people caught up in wars and global catastrophes; closer, to me, personally, because it is set in Europe and managed to invoke that feeling of "this could happen here".

But in the middle of everything that was going on in the last few months, this movie started feeling too real. I almost defaulted because I couldn't find the mental strength to dive into all that darkness and turn it into the vid I really wanted it to be when I first had the idea years ago. I never quite got to the point where I was okay with the end result, until I decided on the last day before the deadline to scrap the whole last minute, which used to be a lot darker than it is now. It was important to me to end it on a hopeful note, with the prospect of a new beginning; start again, start again, start again.

This quote from the book, which I also almost used as the vid summary, resonated with me: "Things happen and once they start happening you pretty much just hold on for dear life and see where they drop you when they stop."

Lyrics

Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages
Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages

I'm in the basement, you're in the sky
I'm in the basement, baby, drop on by
I'm in the basement, you're in the sky
I'm in the basement, baby, drop on by

Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages
Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages

I'm in the basement, you're in the sky
I'm in the basement, baby, drop on by
I'm in the basement, you're in the sky
I'm in the basement, baby, drop on by

Hold your breath and count to 10
Then fall apart and start again
Hold your breath and count to 10
Start again, start again

Hold your breath and count to 10
Then fall apart and start again
Start again, start again, start again...

Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages
Always stays the same, nothing ever changes
English Summer Rain seems to last for ages

Hold your breath and count to 10
Then fall apart and start again
Hold your breath and count to 10
Start again, start again

Hold your breath and count to 10
Then fall apart and start again
Hold your breath and count to 10
Start again, start again, start again...
